Komodo releases

Post by Kevin »

"We have released Komodo 13.3 at komodochess.com. It is a significant strength improvement over 13.2.5, the last release. In standard mode, the gain is about 15 elo points. Since most of the gains are due to better scaling with more depth, the short searches used by MCTS don't benefit much, so the gain in MCTS mode is just around five elo. Both of these gains may be a bit larger at 40/x type time controls due to fixing a bug in that tc logic that appears to go back many years. Total gains from Komodo 13 (or 13.01 or 13.02) range from 25 to 35 elo depending on mode, threads, and time control. The improvements cover a wide range of issues, including extensions, null move, King Safety, time management, and many more. We expect that this will be the last of the Komodo 13 series, other than any free bugfixes we deem worthwhile. Next major release should be Komodo 14. As usual, Komodo 13.3 is free for subscribers and available for a 20% discount to those who bought Komodo 12 or any later version from us." Larry Kaufman

"We have released Komodo 14 at komodochess.com. It is a significant strength improvement over 13.3, the last release, about 20 elo in MCTS mode and 10 elo in standard mode. Total gains from Komodo 13 (or 13.01) are about 50 elo in MCTS mode and 40 elo in standard mode. The improvements cover a wide range of issues, including extensions, null move, King Safety, time management, and many more. There is one new feature added since Komodo 13.3, "Armageddon" mode, which tells Komodo that White (or Black) must win, draws are scored as losses for that color. When draws are counted as losses for White, knowing this improves Komodo's performance as White by about 30 elo according to our tests. In Armageddon mode, the specified color (usually White) not only avoids clear draws, but adjusts Contempt by an amount we determined was most helpful for Armageddon play. Testing on one thread in Armageddon mode suggests that on a modern laptop, if White gets one minute total plus 1% increment, and Black gets half a minute plus 1% increment plus draw odds, then chances are fairly close to balanced. Other features added since Komodo 13 include more levels, Personalities, and Auto-Skill. Standard mode remains the strongest when Multi-PV is not in use, while MCTS mode is generally strongest when both are using Multi-PV.
As usual, Komodo 14 is free for subscribers and available for a 20% discount to those who bought Komodo 13 or any later version from us. Komodo 11 will become free, and Komodo 12 and 13 will go on sale."

I already have Komodo 13.2.5 64 bit and are wondering if Komodo 14 is indeed a significant strength improvement. Any experience about this?

Alas, I have no way to buy a K14. There's only hope for a miracle.

And why don't you have a way to buy a K14?

I live in a part of Ukraine where the war has not subsided yet. International banks do not work here. Our monthly salary is $70-200. Prices for food and other goods are high.

I would urge you to respect the Komodo developers wishes and pay for their if you want this verison, and would not recommend you to get "dodgy" versions.. This said there is a big controversy between Komodo developers and some other developer about the orogins of Komodo code-base and licensing that creates freeware builds of komodo called AdminEditedOut that they post all over in some chess forums.. You may want to google this, I would not post links etc. as I don't have any knowledge of who's in the right on legal issues etc. And would like to respect all chess-developers wishes.. I am all about chess and would like all programmers involved in the wonderful world of chess to thrive and be happy..
